About ABS

The Alabama Bonsai Society (ABS) was organized in 1974 and incorporated as a non-profit organization in 1978.

By vote of the membership November 13, 2017, the ABS meets every other month on the 2nd Monday at 7:00pm in the Auditorium of the Birmingham Botanical Gardens. In 2018, Monday evening meetings are scheduled on these dates:

  • February 12
  • April 9
  • June 11
  • August 13
  • October 8.

Meetings are open to the public, and anyone interested in the art of bonsai is welcome to attend.

Many members come early, bringing trees or bonsai containers to swap or sell, or just to enjoy talking with one another about their trees. Following a short business meeting at 7:00, a member will present a program on a designated tree species, offering help and answering questions from other members.

On the Saturday morning following the meeting, we have a workshop at the BBG “Potting Shed,” where we can bring trees to work on or attend workshops. This is a relaxed time for enjoying each others company while getting seasonal work done on favorite trees. It’s also a time when experienced members can help new enthusiasts with techniques to help grow healthy and beautiful bonsai. In 2018, Saturday meetings in months that do not include a Monday evening meeting could contain short business sessions at 9:30 AM.

The annual spring show is the highlight of our year. Held on the third weekend in May, the juried show features outstanding bonsai from our members. We also have trees, bonsai pots, and bonsai stands for sale, and we encourage all who are interested to ask questions and become new members.

The club provides training for new members and works to promote the art of Bonsai in the area.

Growing Bonsai is a wonderful hobby.  The horticulture of keeping a small tree alive in a pot is an interesting challenge and the art of living sculpture is truly fascinating.  It is a hobby that involves great patience, a lot of knowledge to become proficient and very  enjoyable.  Come join us at one of our meetings.

Our  membership dues are $40.00 per year for individuals and/or families.
